The fun never stops at the Gold Coast. There are so many events and festivals that we barely scratch the surface here. Suffice it to say that the Gold Cast is an action-packed place to be. On any given day, there could be a major event happening and even if not, there’s still the beach, the sunshine and the fabulous atmosphere.
If you’re wondering where you should live, study or holiday, why not consider the Gold Coast in your deliberations? Just for starters, here are some annual events to pique your interest.
For 17 days, the Surfers Paradise beachfront celebrates sand and sea art. Go along to see the art installations and displays, all created by incredibly talented sculptors and artists. You may even get to see the beach library, right on the beach! The festival includes the Australian Sand Sculpting Championships, a competition among nine sand sculptors from all over the world. What they come up with every year is absolutely unbelievable! The whole family will love Sand Safari. Meet pretty mermaids who read stories to children, watch fashion parades, live performers and buskers and have your photo taken on Neptune’s Throne. The festival even offers a Mermaid Swim School at Crowne Plaza and other hotel properties. And, each year, there is an official attempt to break a world record. In 2018, it was for the ‘most sandcastles built in one hour’.
Better whack on your cape; Gold Coast Superhero Weekend is a big deal! Held at Broadbeach, it includes the Supanova Comic Con and Gaming extravaganza, the Gold Coast Film Festival and the NightQuarter Zombie Walk. Meet your favourite superheroes, get some autographs signed, take some selfies but of course, dress up in costume to really get in the spirit.
Held at the Southport Broadwater Parklands, this event is for all the family and celebrates the region’s cultural diversity. Over three stages, you can watch international performances from India, Russia, Africa, the Philippines, South America, Hawaii, the Cook Islands, Japan and more. There are cultural information stalls so you can ask questions or have a chat with people of a different nationality. Children’s rides and attractions will keep the little ones happy and when you’re all hungry, you’ll be able to chow down on food from 22 international stalls. Grab a Greek gyro, an Indian or Thai curry, American ribs, Asian rice, slow smoked barbecue, Turkish gozleme or Japanese karaage or sushi. Make a day of it and have a great time. Entry is free!
This three-day event encompasses Halloween and inspires thousands of people to dress up and compete in costume character competitions. Fully family-friendly, Fest-Evil is lots of fun for all and features kids’ shows and games. You can buy costumes and get your face made up by special fx makeup artists at the beachfront Halloween Markets and even go bobbing for apples. Michael Jackson’s Thriller is performed on stage at Cavill Mall which is where you’ll also find a magic show. Zombie fans will not want to miss the Surfers Paradise Zombie Walk, where crowds of ghosts and ghouls go to great lengths to achieve the perfect look. Free events include fire eating and angle grinding acts. Across Surfers Paradise’s nightclubs, there are Halloween-themed cocktails, vampire parties, murder mystery parties and haunted house-themed nights.
Held at Kurrawa Park, Broadbeach, the Christmas Carols festivities are fun for all. Music is provided by local orchestras and choirs and local singers get the crowd involved for a massive sing-along. Everyone is encouraged to purchase a candle, proceeds of which are donated to The Salvation Army for their Salvos ‘Christmas Cheer’ Appeal. The kids will adore the Little Pacca’s zone which offers a giant slide, face painting and Base Zero rock climbing. Santa will be at the Carols event and it all goes ‘boom boom’ at around 7.30pm with a dazzling fireworks display.
It’s a world-class sporting event that attracts tens of thousands of participants across all age groups and abilities. One of the major drawcards for international runners is the fast, flat course which traces the glorious surf beaches in mild winter conditions with low humidity. Times are quick and sixty per cent of runners achieve their own personal bests every year. Not just a single race, the event includes a Wheelchair Marathon, 10km fun run, 4km Junior Dash and a 2km Junior Dash, plus more. Children from ages 5 and up are welcome to participate and of course, there’s no upper age limit.
When Spring rolls around, it’s time to put on the fascinator and the suit and spend a gorgeous Spring day at the Gold Coast Turf Club. Pick your favourite event or go to all of them! There’s September Pink Ribbon Cup Raceday, the Caulfield Guineas, Caulfield Cup, Cox Plate, Derby Day and Melbourne Cup. Each has its own lively personality and they all are a ton of fun. Sip champagne while you spot celebrities and bet on the horses.
Thirty-five local and interstate breweries converge on Kurrawa Park at Broadbeach and bring with them more than 150 craft beers, ciders and ginger beers. It’s the best day ever for those who want to try and find a new favourite tipple! Don’t worry, there’s loads of food to keep you happy too, from some of the coolest food trucks in southeast Queensland. Think donuts, tacos, burgers, wings, mac and cheese and barbecue. Live music and comedy keep the buzz alive right into the evening. This event is strictly for adults over 18 only.
