Whether you splurge on a Gold Class experience at the cinema or curl up on the couch in your pyjamas with the latest Netflix new release, watching a film is a great way to pass the time.

Choose a documentary to learn something in your down-time, or opt for a light-hearted romantic comedy if you just need to switch off from the everyday stresses of life for an hour or two.

2. Go hiking

Head to your nearest nature reserve or national park and pick a walking trail that suits your fitness level and the time you have available, whether you go for a half-hour relaxed stroll through the forest or a serious full-day hike across mountainous terrain.

Don’t forget your camera or smartphone to capture any special wildlife or scenery you spot, and totes Snapchat or Insta Story the hike if that’s your thing! You’ll improve your fitness while scoring some great pics – win-win.

3. Treat yourself to a special meal

Why not finally book a table at that restaurant you’ve been dying to try for ages? Make it an unlicensed one if you’re worried you’ll be tempted by the bar, or just exercise some good old-fashioned self-control!

Embrace the full gastronomic experience of entrée, main and dessert or go extra fancy and opt for a degustation menu of delicacies. Check out the highest-rated restaurants in your area on sites like Yelp or TripAdvisor if you need some inspiration.

4. Take a dance class

Go on, step out of your comfort zone. Enlist your significant other or a fun-loving friend and attend a dance class in your area. If you can’t convince anyone to go with you, just be brave and front up on your own, then you’ll be allocated a partner.

Why not try your hand at belly dancing, salsa, tango, rock ’n’ roll dancing or even ballet? Choose a class tailored especially for beginners if they offer one. At the very worst, if you find your two left feet can’t be helped, at least you’ll have a good belly laugh.

5. Go shopping

Retail therapy works, okay?! Make a day of it and head to your city or town’s best shopping district to browse the stores. Try on some adventurous new styles to freshen up your wardrobe. Use the testers. Taste the free samples.

Research what’s on at the theatre and plan a classy night out taking in a live show. Support your local small theatre and see an artsy experimental play or buy tickets to a blockbuster musical touring in your city and get dressed up for the occasion.

Going out for a meal before or after the show will really make a night of it, but make sure you book a table as you could be competing with hordes of hungry theatre-goers!
